Keep our Children safe

Posted in thoughts at 8:03 am by scrappydo

I’ve been avoiding thinking on this let alone saying anything here because I simply am sickened to the very depths of myself over it. What will it take to keep our little people, the future of ourselves from the pointless and atrocious harm that little Nia has suffered? It’s exactly this type of sick behaviour that the Anti-Smacking bill was “supposed” to end…. yeah right. These animals were never going to care what kind of law they were breaking so exactly how was the anti-smacking bill going to make them think twice? Where is Sue Bradford on this matter now?

And as for just pointing out that it is the maori children who suffer in this way and therefore that community needs to step up…. Well, maori, dutch, croatian, islander, or just plain kiwi – this was a little New Zealander who has just had any potential she may have held screwed up severely by “people” who just plain should know better. I don’t care what community this occurs in, it happens here in New Zealand. The place we think is so great to bring our kids up in.

Heaven help us all if we can’t save our little ones.

Gosh, did it seemed like I disappeared?? It has sure felt like it!

Reality and all those things that you just have to catch up on finally won out on the priority list and have meant my time on-line lately has been somewhat limited. It’s all good though as it means I’ve been busy studying, creating, and mending.

Mending me as my finger looks ok and I’m almost over a heavy cold that came my way last week. Still taking care of Mr 3’s snotty nose though. Parenthood is full of rewards…..

I’ve managed to create some layouts that I will share if I get the chance – a couple of them have been a long time coming so the fact I got to a crop a week or so ago means they finally got done. I was feeling pretty darn good with myself as I did a count of how many layouts I’ve managed to get done this year…. 46…. and then I read someone’s comment about how it doesn’t matter how many you do as long as you are happy. Hmmm…. I’m pretty darn happy with the fact I have actually gotten the ones I have done…. and therefore making a dent in the pile I have kinda planned. Oh well, it isn’t a race as I keep reminding Mr 6…. but I reckon I’m on track with one ill-defined goal of mine for the year. So, I am happy…..

I have one more CJ round to do until I get my Friendship book back. I’m really looking foward to it…. Getting to look through everyone’s work – but more importantly, their stories. Actually, I tell a lie…. I have TWO more to do…. I’m late with the one that is meant to go out today  (sorry Karen!!)
But the little ATCs above are going out on time. I struggled with the theme of “heritage” for the July ATC swap at Scrapbook Outlet. Finally, although they are simple, I think they take a swipe at my heritage: 1: Born under a Southern Cross, 2: One-eyed Crusader and 3: Kiwiana.

Anyone up for Rhubarb and Finger crumble?

Posted in thoughts at 11:16 am by scrappydo

… Thought not! This is what I was attempting to prepare for the family last night. Why else would I have attempted to slice my finger along with the rhubarb?

It was a pretty deep cut and I thought it might have needed a stitch or two as it was still bleeding an hour and a half later. Once DH was home, I took myself down to the A&E. To sit for about 30 minutes before I got to speak to the triage nurse. What is wrong with our health system? I saw people come in after me with dislocated shoulders, a possible miscarriage and several other nasty injuries. Like me, they had to fill out a form and wait for the single triage nurse available.

Now, I don’t like to waste time and I did think that in the grand scheme of things that my wee injury was probably minor. But as I was still bleeding, I didn’t want to take the risk that it might have been more serious than I realised. So I waited. The triage nurse was lovely when I got to see her – by this time the bleeding had finally stopped. She said I did need stitches , but unless I wanted to hang around for upwards of 6 hours I might be better to go to the afterhours. I thought that that was not a plan for me – I don’t think 2 stitches warrents a 6 hour wait, so I went and paid the phenomenal charges – for two steri strips. Sigh!

All along though I felt guilty for sitting in line potentially taking up space for someone more urgent that me. But then I’m not trained to know minor from something a little mroe serious and we pay our taxes like anyone else so why shouldn’t I receive the care? Our health system – it’s a big debate. And the last thing I want to do is slag off those at the coalface. I think those people are doing by and large a wonderful job in a system which grinds them down as much as the recipients.

It’s not the first time we have encountered our health system. Our Mr 3 needed an operation that was classified “semi-urgent” (ie to be done within 6 months) but after being paperworked to a “routine” classification without further consultation, we finally got it sorted 18 months later. This was after multiple phone calls, letters, calls to the minister’s office, calls to our local MP, almost a call to Fair Go. We were desperate to just get it sorted. The most frustrating thing was that there were the resources (thatis, the money, the nurses, the surgeon etc). What the surgeon couldn’t get was time in theatre. What the….??

Look, I could go on for endless hours about the short comings of the system that we have encountered on a personal level. I know that it, and education, are the sort of pits that will take all the money you can throw at it and still do with more. But come on – there must be a solution. And I believe it is a solution that must be sorted from on high – with the people within the system having their input. Unfortunately I don’t have the answers. But I do believe in a country such as ours we  should not put up with a third world system that seems to be in place right now.

July # 3 Card sketch

Posted in Di Hickman sketches at 1:56 pm by scrappydo

A little gift tag using Di Hickman’s sketch of the week.

OK – so yes, it’s hard to see a white background when you use the white lid on the scanner – but squint a little, OK?! Actually, now it’s published, WP has put a black border in making that part much easier. Cool!

I have to say that I just love, love LOVE the cuttlebug embossing folders. I picked this one up on my recent visit to Christchurch. They didn’t have the one I really wanted in store (the swirly one) but I thought this was a classic design that I should be able to get some us from. And I am!

The pink papers are scraps from a baby girl card I needed to make – so the gift tag was great. Measuring 5.5 sm square, it’s a cute size. I have to say I like the other cards the girls did for Di’s blog a lot better. There seems to be a little something missing from this one….. feel free to leave suggestions…. I might to a re-do!

Did you know?

Posted in Scrapbooking at 4:48 pm by scrappydo

On  the Cooking with Paper Pesto blog, Steph refers to an HP link when she talks about using software to stitch together 12×12 layouts. It was a useful link and I didn’t realise the HP site had information geared towards scrapbooking. So I had a look around.  And came across this article on using your inkjet to emboss. Wow! What a cool idea!

On Being 36

Posted in BOM, Scrapbooking at 11:02 pm by scrappydo

Seeing as I threw out a wee challenge to you to go do some BoM pages. And considering I wanted to do some creating for me. I thought I should really get on and do something. That and my head was hurting from having so many ideas!

I got all inspired by the All About Eve challenge #2: Age – so here is my take. Seeing as hubby as (possibly quite rightly….. ) put a spending cap on my supplies, I had to dig through some of my stash. That can only be a good thing, right?! I think I’ve managed to use supplies from about 3 of the Scrapbook Essentials monthly kits – I bet Meg never thought that would happen!!

My journalling is about how once upon a time I thought 26 was the magical age…. and how suddenly 10 years on, I’m actually more or less comfortable to be in my skin. Most days.

In other news… well, hardly news! Term 3 started today, and it was good to have some routine back. Routine? Yeah right!! An invite to for morning tea – couldn’t refuse. And lunch with an old friend… definitely. And the study…… exactly! Oh well, there’s always tomorrow. Seriously though, it was a good thing having lunch with the girlfriend. I may not have studied, but she did make me walk the vegetarian panini off. And how! Along Oriental Parade, then up the path to Roseneath. I’d forgotten how steep Mt Vic is!! My legs are definitely noticing they got used today. And it was superbly calm and warm in the sun. Grab the moment…. :)

All About Me

Posted in BOM, Scrapbooking at 4:35 pm by scrappydo

How many of us out there are working on a Book of Me album? Or even pages? I reckon there’s a bunch of us who know we should, but for a million and one reasons never get around to it. I’m loving the fact that the fantabulous Janine provides us with some prompts at Scrapbook Essentials. So far I think I’ve only missed the one month – but have plans to catch it up.

While spending time waiting for some assignment answers to come to me, I checked out a few other places – and found this great site: All About Eve. It’s a new blog – designed specifically to get us moving about telling OUR stories. The ones that don’t get told because we’re always too busy telling everyone elses. They of course need to be told – but so do ours! Their first two prompts are great – very simple yet open to a whole range of interpretations. You could keep it simple and light – or delve deeper and get some insight to yourself

So my plan is to get a bit selfish over the next couple of weeks – and do some me pages – get that crafty spark going again. The boys will ALWAYS have a zillion and one pictures that I want to scrap – but I want to make sure I get in some ME time.

So why don’t you join me and get some of your stories told. If you do, link back to me so I can check them out.

Choo, choooo!!

Posted in Holiday fun, family at 4:31 pm by scrappydo

Yesterday was $2 Thursday on the trains. Great activity!

Although the weather was less than desirable, I figured that we would at least be out and about rather than in front of the TV for yet another day. And with luck the trains would have heaters! They did. :)

We hooked up with friends and took the 11.25 from Waterloo into the city. The big boys carried their own tickets, and Mr 3 held on to mine. There was a lot of excitement watching the harbour waves break near the tracks – would it splash us?? At the time we left, there weren’t too many people on the train. Normally when they run the promotion, there is usually a lot more.

At the station we parted with out friends – they were going to meet their dad for lunch. We checked out the time our next train would leave – having decided at the last  minute to jump on the J’ville line. Tunnels you see! Quick pit-stop at the toilets – Mr 3’s nappy was emitting certain *odours* :( Bumped into neighbours from across the street – they were going to Paraparam. Bumped into swim lesson buddies – they had done the trip to Upper Hutt, back into town, and were heading back home. Phew! Just made it to the J’ville train before departure.

The J’ville line is a little rickety-er (that’s a word?!) than I remember and certainly a little more *train-like* than the hutt line. The Mr’s LOVED it. Remembering to count how many tunnels we went through. Got to five and thought that was it. Wait a minute – there’s another one! And One more!!

By the time we reached the end of the line, I decided it would be foolish to turn straight back around so we headed to the J’ville mall for a bite to eat – trusty McD’s! The southerly was diabolical – freezing and driving. But a mad dash and we were inside.

OK – sidebar: the new McD’s system….. it is NOT fast food!!! It might be made fresh when you order it now, but it is NOT out to you faster. I could not believe it took 20 minutes with just 2 people in front of me!!!! So, we missed the 1pm train back to the city…. fine, we’ll catch the 1.30.

The ride back was a lot noisier – lots more families heading back from similar outings. A bunch of teenagers riding too: trying to be cool with sounds. They were noisey as! But they were having fun and not really annoying anyone.

Back at the central station – then we ran back across the platforms to catch our final train for the day back out to the Hutt. The Mr’s were a little less excitable and a little more manic now… but not too bad. By the time we got home about 3 and a half hours later, Mr 3 curled up on the couch and went to sleep (so cute!).

And when dad came home, there was loud and excited talk of the day’s adventures.

Not too bad for 4 bucks and a wet day!

I think this is just wrong in so many ways!

On a forum I’m on, someone popped up this warning that Tara Whitney popped on her blog. Good on her for making it known and *out there*!

I find it scary that people with the tech knowledge are so caught up in the “Hey, this would be cool” moment that they haven’t thought through the consequences. I doubt it applies to anyone outside the US, but give it time, it probably will.

I say let’s step up and make it known that this has serious implications and they should re-think the concept… A LOT!!

Lots of Punches?

Posted in Scrapbooking, Study, things at 11:48 am by scrappydo

Just spotted a clever idea for storing punches….. Take a look here. I still want to get my hands on those scalloped punches.
Hoping to get some crafty stuff done today. Bringing home a pile of *historic* photos and stories makes me want to get a move on some of my heritage pages. I also have a bunch of ideas roaming – as always! – in my head. It seems a wee while since I’ve done some scrapping for me – lots of cards, circle journals and swaps but not too many of my own layouts. Hopefully there is still some creative juices upstairs…. mind you, they might be hibernating. I wish I was!

And if you are blog-hopping or some such today, go take a look at Country Papercrafts. They have a new competition running, along the line of Amazing Race. Sounds like a lot of fun. I’ve decided not to join in on this one. It’s about time: I really do need to knuckle down and catch up on my study. Still, seeing some of the work in the gallery of these ladies, you just know that some really great pages will be produced.

Right, better get downstairs and figure out something yummy and warm to eat for lunch. Kids have a playdate today – always good to occupy the Mr’s on a cold day!
